⛔ Foods Rabbits Must Never Eat

🛑
If your rabbit ate something on this list

Rabbits physically cannot vomit — inducing vomiting is both useless and dangerous (aspiration). After any ingestion:

  1. Remove the remaining food; note what / how much / when
  2. Do not induce vomiting, give milk, or give activated charcoal on your own
  3. Contact a rabbit-savvy vet — Oxbow's guidance: after ingesting any item below, contact a vet regardless of amount[1]

Toxic (potentially fatal)

FoodToxin / effect
Chocolate / cocoaTheobromine + caffeine; darker = more toxic; can be fatal[1]
AvocadoPersin — respiratory distress, heart failure[1]
Onion / garlic / leeks / chives (raw or cooked)Hemolytic anemia — red-cell destruction[1]
Fruit seeds & pits — apple, pear, peach, cherry, plumCyanogenic glycosides; flesh is fine, seeds/pits removed[1]
Raw potato (and sprouts)Solanine + high starch[1]
RhubarbHigh oxalate, disrupts calcium metabolism[1]
MushroomsMycotoxin risk, raw or cooked[1]
Fava / kidney beansHigh starch → diarrhea, bloat, dysbiosis[1]

Should never be fed

FoodWhy
Meat / eggs / dairy (incl. yogurt drops)Rabbits are strict herbivores; animal protein destroys cecal flora; lactose-intolerant[1]
Bread / crackers / chips / pastaHigh starch and sugar → dysbiosis, obesity, potentially fatal enterotoxemia[1]
Nuts & seedsExcessively fatty; shell fragments risk aspiration
Iceberg lettuceContains lactucarium, nearly nutrient-free; harmful in quantity[1]
Sugary drinks / human snacksNever
Cat or dog foodProtein/fat formulas wholly unsuitable

Common misconceptions

  • "Rabbits love carrots" → carrots are a sugary treat, not a staple (cartoon myth); feed as a vegetable in small amounts
  • Cat hairball gel → harmful for rabbits (oil coats the mass, makes it water-resistant) — the hairball truth (Chinese)
  • "A little yogurt aids digestion" → dairy is contraindicated; see the probiotics topic (Chinese)
  • Self-dosing vitamins → fat-soluble vitamins accumulate to toxicity; do not supplement without a vet

Houseplants & outdoor plants

Many common plants are toxic (lily, azalea, pothos, ivy, tulip bulbs…). Use our toxic plant checker (Chinese UI, species names searchable) — every entry carries a Cornell/HRS source.

Outdoors: grass treated with pesticides is off-limits; lawnmower clippings ferment and cause bloat — never feed.

The safe side
