🦷 Dental Health — Why Hay Is Non-Negotiable
Dental disease is the number one hidden trigger of GI stasis: tooth pain stops a rabbit from chewing hay → gut motility slows → stasis. Many owners think a rabbit "suddenly stopped eating" is a gut problem, when the root is in the teeth.
The only effective prevention is eating grass hay — which is why this site repeats "unlimited long-stem hay" as the first rule of rabbit keeping: it solves digestion and teeth at once.
Teeth that never stop growing
Rabbit teeth grow continuously, about 2 mm per week[1]. The full dentition is 28 teeth, including the small "peg teeth" behind the upper incisors — a key trait distinguishing rabbits from rodents[2].
All teeth are elodont (open-rooted): like rodent incisors, they must be worn down at the same rate they grow.
Only hay grinds teeth — pellets cannot
Chewing hay produces the side-to-side grinding motion that wears molars down. This motion requires long, coarse fiber to generate friction.
Pellets and soft vegetables are crushed vertically and swallowed — no lateral grinding, no wear[3].
A pellet can match hay's vitamins and calories. It can never replace hay's two physical functions: wearing teeth and stimulating gut motility. A pellet-heavy diet leads directly to overgrown molars, sharp spurs, pain, food refusal, and GI stasis.

- Malocclusion — teeth do not meet properly; acquired (diet-based, most common) or congenital (common in dwarf breeds)
- Tooth-root abscess — jaw swelling with thick, caseous pus; extremely hard to treat, requires surgery + long antibiotics. Any jaw/facial swelling → vet immediately[2]
- Nasolacrimal duct blockage — upper molar roots press the tear duct: recurring weepy eyes are usually dental in origin. Eye drops treat the symptom, not the cause.
High-risk breeds
Compact-faced (brachycephalic) breeds are most affected: Netherland Dwarf, Holland Lop, Lionhead, Dutch, Dwarf Hotot. They need more frequent dental checks[3].
Home check (weekly)
- Flip the upper lip: 4 upper incisors should be even, aligned, white-to-ivory
- Feel along the jaw and cheeks: no lumps or bumps (abscess?)
- Watch eating: no food dropping (quidding), no selective refusal of hay
- No drooling (wet/stained chin), no loud tooth grinding (pain signal — distinct from soft contented purring)
Molars — where most disease lives — cannot be checked at home. Annual vet exams still required (twice yearly for dwarf breeds).
- Any incisor abnormality (curved, overgrown, discolored)
- Jaw/facial swelling or palpable lump
- Drooling + refusing food
- Food dropping from the mouth
- Recurring weepy eyes
- Stops eating hay but still eats pellets (early molar-spike sign — not pickiness)
